Leaving the debating chambers through the right-hand side of the door
they voted against the entrenched and prolonged inequalities
prevailing in society; ayes against educational privileges,
noes to money, influence and status, over being a local collaborator
And the motion failed. Looking around at all these faces who can afford
to tread on these wooden and rigid floors: social diversity in time of scarcity
was their grandfather a farmer, their grandmother a typist before pregnancy?
Did they come from humble beginnings or were they personally invited to the springboard?
Aware of educational and vocational privileges so to take a stand
while swiftly benefiting fully from the one-sided system
what will they do with what has been given to them?
